02 — The Hand
Trained the classical way
He has painted from life since 1988, and has never stopped.
Born in Mumbai in 1967, Vijay Achrekar took his Diploma in Drawing and Painting at the L.S. Raheja School of Art in 1988, graduating as a Gold Medallist. He works alla prima — wet into wet, most of a picture resolved in a single sitting, the stroke left standing where it fell.
The method is conventional and the touch is not. Surfaces are smooth and quietly realistic, built from confident, economical brushwork; alongside them he paints striking abstractions. He is known for holding a relaxed, graceful posture with precision even inside a dynamic mark.
